How to use the bedtime routine chart

  • Start at about the same time each evening, early enough that nobody has to rush. A short routine done calmly is easier than a long one squeezed in.
  • Keep the order the same every night. When the steps always come in the same sequence, the chart does the reminding and bedtime needs fewer words.
  • Keep the chart in the bathroom or by the bed, where the routine actually happens. A chart on the fridge is out of sight by the time pajamas are on.
  • Turn screens off before the first step. Ending a show at a set time is easier than stopping it halfway through the routine.
  • Tick each step as it's done, and let your child tick the last box just before lights out, so the day ends with something finished.

Which page fits your child

Ages 3–5

Seven picture steps: toys in the basket, a bath on bath nights, pajamas on, brushing teeth with a grown-up, toilet and a drink of water, a story, then lights out with a goodnight song. The pictures do the reading at this age, and a grown-up stays close for every step.

Ages 6–8

This page adds a bit of getting ready for tomorrow: clothes in the hamper, tomorrow's clothes on the chair and the school bag by the door. Then come washing and pajamas, brushing teeth, reading, and five slow breaths before lights out. Many kids this age can do most steps alone and like ticking them off.

Ages 9–12

A shorter list for more independent kids: bag and lunch ready, shower, floss and brush, devices charging outside the room, reading, and in bed by a time you fill in together. Writing the bedtime on the chart makes it something you agreed on, which tends to mean less bargaining at 9 p.m.

Questions about bedtime routine charts

What is a good bedtime routine for kids?

A short, calm sequence that happens in the same order every night: getting ready for tomorrow, washing, teeth, something quiet like a story or reading, then lights out. Each page of the chart follows that pattern for its age group.

How long should a bedtime routine take?

Long enough that nobody has to hurry. For many families that's around half an hour, and bath nights take longer. If bedtime keeps running late, start earlier instead of cutting the quiet steps at the end.

Can I change the steps or add my child's bedtime?

Yes. Cross out a step or write in your own, and the 9–12 page has a line for the bedtime. You can also open the chart in the free chart maker, change the steps and add your child's name before you print.
